Improving industrial security with drones and Cisco Spark

The manufacturing sector has been through a lot of transformations since the advent of cut-throat competition for higher productivity and profitability. Industrial Revolutions have been consistently filling up the gaps that hinder the growth in efficiency of manufacturing sectors and Industry 4.0 is a name for the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies.

A recent research done by Cisco on CxO and VPs of Oil&Gas companies across 14 different countries, has identified how important is to improve industrial processes so that when problems arise, more informations are available to the organization.

As a matter of fact a major part of this whole digital journey is data exchange. Data transition plays a major role for any organization to fight out the stiff competition. The time taken by data to get collected, processed and analyzed makes or breaks the firm’s ability to understand its processes better and make them more efficient. Industry 4.0 will see real time information transfer and disruptive analysis of product development.

Imagine a chemical plant which produces chemicals on a large scale. All components of the plant, from pipelines to exhausts are connected with sensors and actuators. Integrated Connections help to control the stocks and levels of chemicals without much human interference. One day there is some unexpected leak in a pipeline and a hazardous gas starts getting dispersed in the air. The person monitoring the plant processes realizes the problem within seconds due to real time data transfer through advanced sensors.

In this example built by Angelo Fienga, Architect UC&IoT WW Sales and Strategy of the Cisco team, drones are used to monitor air quality in industrial areas. A single end-to-end solution that quickly interacts and communicate to the person in charge for an industrial process, letting him know if any problem is arising and providing him all the necessary informations.

Drones are monitoring air quality all the time and an automated machine to machine workflow was logging and monitoring the measurements of the air quality. If data values collected by the drone are higher then a predefined security threshold, the person responsible for that is notified in a Spark room with the a reference to the data.

The integration between the different pieces of this data flow was built using Stamplay which allowed the Cisco team to deliver the solution with speed and agility. This is just the beginning of it, such solutions can be extended with more capabilities like machine learning for visual recognition or spark bot can be used to query the data set and the drone.

Industries will be more and more connected and an exponentially increasing quantity of data sources will need to be stored, processed and transformed into actionable data.

As data integration will be the number one barrier to get things done in this space, the right toolkit will make industries more agile and able to respond to changes. Data and more specifically insights and knowledge in ecosystems of sharing are where the future revenue opportunities reside.
