Seeing The Sausage Being Made

Looking through the glass of the oven door while cookies are baking can be exhilarating. The chips of the chocolate chip cookie glisten and you can tell the edges of a well cooked cookies are crisp while the dough is still warm and pliable.

However, the same doesn’t hold for diffision based art. It can be scary to see the images bake. Often, they look nothing like the end product and I’ve thought about canceling jobs part way through image generation because of how poorly things were going. Then between 93% and 100% done, a change would magically happen that would turn the images into something exceptional.

This likely discloses the nonlinear nature of generative AI. You only get to the clearest outcome a step or two before the final drawing. That said, how art gets presented to us as it’s drawn will likely change. We might have the stepst in what’s presented to us show us a linear improvement or we make get explainable drawing that could be mimicked by a person.

While AI might do things in one way, it must ensure that the actions are explainable so we can understand whether or not the machine is accurate.
