The Bible

Christianity and Modern Liberalism

Modern Liberalism has always had the potential to lose the purpose behind certain things in the Bible and in the Christian message. The Christian message can only be revealed to us by the God or the Word of God. Many times Modern Liberalism elevates the liberal doctrine of God and the liberal doctrine of man to having greater influence than the inspired Word of God. This cannot happen. This has potential for Christ followers to lose their way.

First, we must look at what the Bible is and what message is delivered and from who it comes from. The Bible is a direct message and declaration from God to mankind. In this message we find things in the Bible that bring confirmation and evidence of the message coming from God. Whether it is through his creation or through his influence of man. Throughout the Bible we see confirmation of his revelation until we are given a NEW revelation that comes from the Son of God.

Is that not the most beautiful thing? A way was made open to all men for us to come into communion with the Creator Himself. The veil was torn and we are set free by Jesus, the Son of God. This act was not something that someone found, but was that something that actually occurred. “For Christianity depends, not upon the complex of ideas, but upon the narration of an event.” Without this recorded narration the Christian message is lost. What is the point then?

Many object to this belief in this particular event. The contents of Gods Word is always put under objection due to how old the events are and the accuracy of the translation process. How can it be trusted? How can we bank our entire existence on something that is so “out of date”?

Honestly when I read these words from Machen, I had to stop and really think. It’s a good question and as Christians we must ask ourselves these hard questions.

Machen then proceeds with explaining how this question ignores the evidence that is found in the Christian experience today. God is still working, no? Even though these events happen a very long time ago, doesn’t mean that they don’t have any effects today. I feel like sometimes as Christian’s we forget that because Jesus is still living today that he still is working today as well. The Christian experience is still proving today what God’s word said thousands of years ago.

We must remember that there is a balance between the Christian experience and the Bible. God’s word is infallible and truth. We cannot separate these to because they feed off of each other. We cannot have Christian experience without the Bible and we the Bible is what provides us with the Christian experience. They are directly connected.

Modern Liberalism find dependence upon the word of man instead of from the word of God. We must flee from that thinking. On the other hand it’s still a balance. The Bible is from God and must be upheld. We must remember…
