Who are you choosing to listen to?

The year was 2007. I was in my second year of organic chemistry at the University and my professor said,

Granted, my grade was low. I had not worked as hard as I could have, but I was not going to have someone else tell me that it was their decision whether or not I was going to succeed.

There are a few ways this could have gone:

If I believed what the Professor told me, “I could have simply walked away and failed his class.”

Or I could not have believed what the Professor said and denied the rationale behind his decision, continued on the path that I had already embraced at the beginning of the year and probably failed.

Or I could have chosen not to believe the professor’s feedback and simply stayed on the path you have embraced and probably fail.

I could have worked hard and failed.

Or I could work hard, be focused, and surround myself with people who believed in me and didn’t let me off the hook.

I was curious how I wasn’t going to pass the class when I was intentional about my time and effort.

That doubt from others drove my curiosity — fueled my hunger to succeed.

What about in your life, in your work, in the art you are creating? For you today, in the important work you are doing.

Are you believing what people are saying? You could simply walk away and not share your work because you believe they are right.

You could not believe what they are saying but deny the rationale behind their feedback, continue on the same path that you have already embraced and probably fail. You could choose not to believe the feedback, from a valued source, and simply stayed on the path you have embraced and probably fail.
You could work hard and fail.

Or you could work hard, be focused, and surround yourself with people who believed in you and didn’t let me off the hook because you know and they know that your work is important.

I believe in you. I am curious about the work you are doing; we are curious about the work you are doing.

When someone says to you, “it can’t be done.” How are you going to respond?

You have to choose yourself.

You have to pick yourself.

But you don’t have to do the work alone, so on April 23rd, the Unlearnings team is putting together an event specifically for those who want to be focused and want to surround themselves with people who believe in their work.
