Escrever pra desabafar é um hábito meu. Havia deixado tal costume por falta de tempo. Mas hoje eu queria dividir com o maior número de pessoas os meus sentimentos sobre tudo que aconteceu no Brasil…
Well not exactly.
I didn’t know a better first post to start off this blog than the most formative moment of my life.
It was a sunny day and I couldn’t be more stressed. I was cooped up in my university’s basement library and struggling with my final year dissertation.
Tired and anxious from all the all-nighters and energy drinks I had been consuming – safe to say i wasn’t in the best mind-frame. I started to think that it’d be easier to just fail and re-do the entire year completely.
In between tweeting about my mental breakdown and messaging a friend to come over to campus so she could help me borrow some books (my library card was blocked) I randomly remembered a GIF on Tumblr of a Japanese man with the caption ‘Never Give Up!’. I don’t know why this image suddenly crossed my mind but I immediately went to find the video.
Surely enough, from watching the video he was yelling.
In his own words he was in -20 degrees water fishing for clams. His message? ‘You’ve come this far! Think of all the people who have cheered for you, you just need to carry on a little further’ ‘If I can stand here in this freezing water then you can do it!’ followed by that infamous ‘Never Give Up!’ motto I saw.
I didn’t expect it to, but it hit me in waves. I was really low and saw no way out and as silly as it may seem the video gave me hope and let me believe I could do it and that all I needed to do was push a little more.
I managed to complete my dissertation and graduated with honours but it’s the message of this video that will stay with me forever.
Even today, I try not to worry about the past or the future but to just do my best at this moment and still have the card to this day.
I also always tell this story to anyone who will listen, life becomes a lot less stressful once you realise that all you can expect from yourself is your best.
Every year many families come to terms with the harsh reality that someone they know or a family member will be enlisting themselves into the armed forces. Enlisting in the military is the most…
