The Type of Day You Should Fear

You slept in, and immediately sense the deep satisfaction of waking up in a warm set of cushy sheets. You treat yourself to a long and satisfying stretch, and can’t help but smile to yourself in the process. All in all you are bathing in complete and utter comfort. Of course, like every day, there are things you feel you should be doing: working out, reading, or taking a step towards your meaningful goals. But those bedsheets… they just feel incredible… and so you can’t help but ask: “What if I free ride this day?”. Does that sound familiar to you?

The fundamental component for a successful and fulfilling life is without a doubt an empowering belief system. You probably won’t achieve anything if you do not believe it is possible. That should make sense to you, and I am sure it does. But, just out of curiosity, have you ever asked yourself what reinforces an empowering belief system?

I have found that the answer is personal integrity: i.e. self-trust. If you do not trust yourself you will face immense challenges in building an empowering belief system. How can you believe in something if you do not trust yourself enough to act in accordance with your belief? Developing your self-trust is fundamental, and the cool thing is: it is trainable.

You can cultivate self-trust by keeping the promises you make to yourself. Set yourself up to win by creating a set of simple daily commitments. Here are examples of some of the daily commitments I hold myself accountable to: a workout cycle, a journaling practice, a morning and evening routine, and a minimum amount of reading time.

The cool thing is that every day you keep your commitments, you will earn credibility with your subconscious. The more self-credibility you accumulate over time, the more self-trust, you will have.

How do you feel about free riding now? Do you still think free riding is such a good idea? I would challenge you to think about it carefully.

The truth is rest does not have to come at the expense of your daily commitments. Maybe you can take an hour out of your “relax day” to work out? If it is a rest day for the gym- maybe you could do your reading and journaling in bed?

Look, I do not want to ruin these days for you. There is obviously a time where rest and relaxation are not only appropriate but also encouraged. I would just ask you to make that decision consciously. Don’t immediately and fully indulge in self-gratification if it damages the personal integrity you worked so hard to build. In the long run, chances are it won’t be worth it.
