Empathy is not Charity

The statement expressed by Patricia snow states young people today are emotional vampires. They show interest in people’s suffering but don’t really care about it. This statement is not true.

Most of society today cares about those who are suffering. They take action. At the Good Shepherd Church in Alexandria 40 students and adults gave up their comfort for a night and camped out like the homeless. This brought awareness to a problem that keeps on growing.

We don’t just care about ourselves. We go to church and participate in Christian service because we really care. We want to make a difference.

A group of 8 U.S. citizens for five days lived along the border visiting people living in refugee shelters. These people shared meals, prayers, and daily reflections with each other. These citizens went down there to experience what it was like to be a refugee because they care.

Patricia Snow says our culture practices empathy in an attempt to fill Christ’s shoes. I don’t buy this. We practice empathy because we care about people. We are all made in the image and likeness of God and most people care about other human beings. Christ says to love our neighbor as ourselves. Our neighbors include every human being on this planet.

Cardinal Ratzinger says to become truly real means to come to know Jesus Christ and to learn from him what it means to be human. To know Christ means to be human. We learned from him to care for others and how to live a good life.

Monsignor Guardini says a person is the most self evident of all facts to understand. He’s saying we are the best people to understand how other people are.

For most people these statements are wrong. We may take interest in the suffering of others but we take action to help people. When we see something bad happen we care. We take action. For example Houston. Many people went down to Houston or donated items because they cared. That was a huge project and people cared about other people.

Patricia snow is wrong. We care about others. We donate to those in need. That is caring which shows we are not emotional vampires who only care about other people’s suffering. We learned from Christ to care for others and it continues to be expressed today.

Archbishop Vigneron in Unleash the Gospel says to repent and believe in the gospel. Those who have done bad repent and turn to God. They do good deeds for those who need them showing them compassion.

Those who know they have sinned go to confession. They understand they have sinned and want to get it off their souls and they turn to help those repent. That is showing compassion for others trying to get them to heaven by confessing their sins.

Emotional vampires are people who take interest in the hurt of others and don’t care. They could care less if people are suffering emotionally physically or mentally. Some of society expresses this but most of society is not emotional vampires.
