Songwriter as a career

How to create a song? Where to start?

First things first!

All the work begins with an idea, a theme! Sometimes we can “see” things differently of most of the people. One conversation, an argue, an accident, a pregnancy, a common expression or even a bird flying can be a song theme. That’s the beauty! You feel a goosebump and you know you have to write a song about that.

Step 1: Pay attention on everything that is happening by your side (around you). Keep taking notes about every kind of theme you think about, no matter how simple or weird you think it is. Record a voice note if you prefer. You will need everything.

Personally, I can easily write about a specific theme and find rhyming words (reading a lot helps). So I normally look for someone who has a facility on melodies to work with me on my songs. That adds quality, diversity and dynamics to the whole thing. But nothing stops you to do everything by yourself; sometimes being introspective is the best way to reach your feelings and put it out of your guts. However I often like to take into consideration a second point of view (by the way, that’s a theme of one of my songs, lol) during the process.

Step 2: Find yourself a fellow (or many) to increase your ideas and deliver what you can’t.

The challenge begins when you play the first note. Now you have to pick your instrument and exercise your imagination (your most powerful weapon). I’ve found myself an acoustic guitar lover and my voice feels comfort on “G” harmonic scale. You will set your preferences with time.

Step 3: Start to practice an instrument. Play as much as you can. It will provide you a “base” to your melodies.

All the stories are told in a logical sequence. That’s what make them interesting; you have to catch the audience’s attention. If your song is easy enough to a child understand, everyone will memorize the lyric and you have just improved your success odds.

Step 4: Think structurally. Provide context to your audience. It has to be easily understandable. Remember, you are a storyteller.

And last but not least, I recommend you to record a track to show people your song and most of all to do not forget your creation. If you are doing this as a job you will, eventually, forget one or another. Beside that, recording your songs as fast as you can, you maintain your portfolio organized, accessible and transparent about your intonation, interpretation and keep intact the true meaning of your song.

Step 5: If you have a pretty good idea about how your song will perform better, (gender, rhythm, etc.) invest in a semi professional track. That will help you prove your point to everyone who listen to it.

This “step by step” works as a guide to work proficiently. And believe-me when I tell you: Discipline is the key to get better in everything you do. Creative work included.

Start with that! We’ll talk more later.
