Weekly Post Three

TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms today. Especially with the pandemic, many people have been spending more time on their phones, and I can say that I am one of those people that used my time in quarantine to spend many late nights scrolling through TikTok.

Earlier this year the “Autism Challenge” spread around the app. The challenge was to mock and make fun of those with disabilities such as autism. I personally do not know anyone with this specific disability, but my younger brother struggles with other disabilities such as sensory processing disorder and several others that are similar to the autism spectrum. This challenge is extremely insensitive and dehumanizing to those that have disabilities.

Many petitioned and demanded the #autismchallenge be removed and ban from TikTok. Many parents of children with autism and other disabilities took to the app to share their own stories about their children. After the challenge was ban from TikTok many people with autism have begun sharing their own stories and journey with this disability. One of my favorite TikTokers shares her journey with autism and works through her triggers.

I believe that many people get too wrapped up in the world around them and disregard the feelings of those different from them.
