How To Visit Anyplace as a Photographer

And Get the Best Shots

Visiting a place for the first time as a photographer is much the same as any travel. You need to do some planning and research. But beyond knowing which landmarks and tourist attractions to visit, travel photography requires a bit more than normal planning.

Some will disagree with this, and I will give my reasoning at the end of this article, but I think you need to plan on capturing the main attractions. The places that are in all the travel brochures. Sure, they’ve been photographed to death, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t come away with your take on it.

Those sites are so well known, you already know about them before you plan your trip. But there are probably other locations that aren’t necessarily big draws to tourists but are attractive to some reason to photographers. You can find these semi-hidden gems in a variety of ways.

Google photography and the city and you should get a lot of images. Most will be the standard places but look for the great shots of lesser-known sites. Also, go to photography specific sites like 500px and enter the city. You will not only get ideas for places to shoot, but some interesting ideas for the places you already know.

As a photographer, you already know about the blue and golden hours. This of course means missing breakfast and dinner with the family, but that’s what it takes to get the shot. Not only will you get the best light, but at dawn especially, there will be no one else there but other photographers.

Before you leave home, bring up each photo site in Google Maps and check out the direction for sunrise and sunset to determine the best location to shoot from. In many places, the Roman Forum comes to mind, it may take a long time to navigate to the opposite side of a site. Some apps will give the exact time and direction of the sun, but it’s pretty easy to figure out without one.
