Sustainable Tourism In The Anthropocene

A new book explores the novel collaboration between scientists and the tourism industry unfolding in the Bahamas.

“There once was a strange time,” future parents will tell their wide-eyed kids, “when human beings actually believed the Earth was just an inert rock, rather than a living system: an inert stage for human-centered stories to unfold.”

Looking back on our present era of climate crisis, future humans will regard this strange period of history as the time when people irrationally believed they were separate from the Earth, rather than what we actually were: one among many beings interdependent with it.

It wouldn’t be until a global climate crisis finally leveled a shock to their anthropocentric worldview, forcing human beings (or rather a select group of high-consuming human beings known as ‘super emitters’) to recognize that they were actually part of a living planet; that Earth was alive, dangerously alive.

There are different words for the era Ghosh describes as the Great Derangement, but an increasingly popular term is the Anthropocene, a geologic epoch after the Holocene when human beings became the dominant force shaping the biochemical makeup of the planet.
